Sixth form conference sends 100 students to hospital

On 25 June over 100 local sixth formers will be heading to the RUH to attend a three day conference on careers in healthcare.

The sixth formers, who come from both state and private schools in the Bath area, will attend lectures and choose workshops on subjects ranging from state-of-the-art heart attack treatment to putting on plaster casts and taking blood.

A wide range of health care professions are represented at the conference, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers and midwives.

The students can join in interactive sessions to help them understand what it's like to have schizophrenia, how decisions are made about assisted conception, how to deliver a baby, how to deal with a cardiac arrest, and many other aspects of hospital life.

For most though, the highlight of the three day event will be meeting a patient who is going to have knee replacement surgery and then watching the operation on a live link with a surgeon on hand to explain exactly what is happening.

Feedback from previous attendees praised the conference for giving some fantastic insight into career choices in healthcare:

"I really enjoyed the three days. Loved the talks and seeing the different people in healthcare; awesome to be able to watch a live op and see the team afterwards."

"Really useful! Good insight into being a doctor and into other healthcare careers; emphasized the importance of teamwork and how different roles fit together to treat the patient."
