Regional (local) anaesthesia
Many operations are carried out under regional anaesthesia. Regional anaesthesia is a technique that involves anaesthetising a specific part of the body rather than anaesthetising the whole body as in a general anaesthetic. Orthopaedic operations in particular, are often dealt with this way.
Regional anaesthesia has a number of benefits to patients, including avoiding the risks and side effects of a general anaesthetic, improving post-operative pain relief, and improving surgical outcome.
Your anaesthetist will discuss a regional technique with you if appropriate.
