Overview & Contact Details
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic is an emergency clinic for women with pain and/or bleeding in early pregnancy from 6 weeks to 14 weeks gestation.

The Clinic
The EPAC is an open access clinic; patients do not need to be referred by a GP or midwife.
During COVID-19 this clinic is no longer operating as a walk-in clinic. Patients must call in advance.
Patient should call 01225 825803 and leave details of their name, date of birth and contact telephone numbers. A member of the EPAC team will return their call - this will appear on their phone as 'caller unknown'.
Not all women will require a scan. We do not perform an ultrasound scan on women who have a NEGATIVE urinary pregnancy test on the day they attend the EPAC.
Referral Criteria
The early pregnancy assessment clinic has proved invaluable in improving the care of women who have experienced bleeding and pain in early pregnancy. This is an emergency service so numbers of women attending each day can be unpredictable and waiting time can be extensive.
Criteria for attendance
- Patients must be clinically stable
- Women with a positive pregnancy test and amenorrhoea between 6 and 14 weeks with pain or and bleeding
NOTE
- If a women has a positive pregnancy test and is less than 6 week pregnant, she will be assessed by the EPAC team and may not be offered an ultrasound scan until a later date.
- Women with a history of ectopic pregnancy who are ASYMPTOMATIC, should have a scan by direct referral to the ultrasound department at 7 weeks
- Patients with a history of recurrent miscarriage should have their care planned on an individual basis. Routine reassurance scans are currently not available via EPAC
- Women with PV bleeding or pain, who are over 14 weeks, should be referred to the Gynaecology Emergency Clinic (GEAC) via the on call Consultant Gynaecologist on 07824363076
- Women with a history of Molar pregnancy, if symptomless, should have a scan by direct referral to the ultrasound department at 8-10/40
