Overview
Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry concerned with the development and management of irregularities of the teeth, jaws and face (malocclusion). Malocclusion is not a disease but simply a marked variation in the normal position of the teeth. Orthodontic treatment can improve the function and appearance of the mouth and face. Orthodontic appliances are used to straighten the teeth.
The aim of orthodontic care is to produce a healthy, functional bite creating greater resistance to dental disease and improving facial appearance. This contributes to the mental as well as the physical wellbeing of the individual.
Referrals for treatment or diagnostic opinions should be made using the Orthodontic Referral Form. Patients will only be accepted for treatment if they meet the criteria listed in the Orthodontic Referral Criteria form.
Referrals made other than on the Orthodontic Referral Form will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender.
