About the Department
The Children's Centre opened in 2001. It is a purpose built centre with 33 inpatient beds for children up to the age of 16 years (18 years for those in full time education) with both medical and surgical conditions. There is also a Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) within the Children's Ward with 5 designated spaces. There is a Consultant Paediatrician on-service for the Children's Ward each week.
Adjacent to the Children's Ward is the Children's Outpatients department. In addition to general paediatric clinics, we hold a number of specialist clinics and we work closely with tertiary services, predominantly in Bristol. General paediatric clinics are also held in Community Hospitals across the Bath Clinical Area. The Children's Therapies Department is located within the Children's Centre, Zone B, Dept 11.
The award winning Dyson Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was opened in 2011. There are 5000 deliveries per year in the Bath Clinical area and with approximately 500 admissions to NICU annually. The Neonatal Department also provides services for normal newborns and has dedicated follow up clinics for high risk children. There is a Consultant Paediatrician on-service for NICU each week.
The Paediatric department works closely with the Community Child Health team (Sirona Care & Health Community Interest Company). Their services include:
- immunisation and public health programmes
- long term care of children with neurodisability
- child protection
- audiology services
- investigation and management of children with autistic spectrum disorders and attention disorders (ADHD)
