Bronchiectasis Service
Bronchiectasis Service
The RUH provides a dedicated service for patients with bronchiectasis, a condition of the lungs where mucus builds up in the airways resulting in persistent infection, discoloured sputum and repeat chest infections or ‘exacerbations’.
A CT scan of the chest is used to diagnose the condition. Management tends to be different from treating other chest infections including: regular airway clearance; careful use of antibiotics typically for longer duration; in some cases, intravenous and/or nebulised (aerosolised) antibiotics; along with a tailored treatment plan for each patient.
We have a multi-disciplinary team approach utilising two hospital consultants, a team of respiratory nurse specialist and physiotherapy, pharmacy and microbiology working across the hospital and into the community. A dedicated clinical database allows clear communication between teams of professionals.
