Clinical Application
IGF-1 is a hormone within the family of growth factors and is mainly produced in the liver. IGF-1 mediates the action of growth hormone in peripheral tissues including the bone, kidney, nerves, muscle, amongst others.
IGF-1 analysis is useful in the diagnosis and treatment of growth hormone excess (acromegaly), or deficiency (investigating short stature in children). It may also be useful as a baseline test for micro- and macroadenomas and in annual monitoring in those with macroadenomas.
IGF-1 analysis is NOT indicated for routine hypopituitary screens, or in microadenomas/non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs).
Please note change in reference range following method change at BRI 13/11/2023.
