Parenteral nutrition (PN) preparations can contain relatively high concentrations of manganese and monitoring is required to prevent toxicity developing, which can lead to
neurological symptoms resembling Parkinson's disease. NICE recommends that manganese concentration is monitored every 3-6 months in patients on long-term PN.
