Cushing’s syndrome may be caused by excessive, exogenous cortisol i.e. medications such as prednisone, or endogenous cortisol production by the adrenals or ectopic ACTH production. Cushing’s disease refers to Cushing’s which is caused by an ACTH secreting tumour of the pituitary gland.
