Clinical Application
Amiodarone is an iodine containing anti-arrhythmic drug. It can both increase and decrease thyroid hormone synthesis and may occasionally cause clinical thyroid disease.

Measurement is not routinely indicated in patients on amiodarone therapy. These patients should have regular LFT and TFT. May be useful in checking compliance. Measurement of DEA/amiodarone ratio may be useful in checking intermittent compliance due to different half-lives of metabolite and parent. Consult with reference lab.

Measurement of amiodarone is of limited clinical utility in suspected toxicity due to long tissue half-life.
