Sample must be received by the lab within 60 minutes if the sample is on ice, or within 30 minutes if not on ice.
Patient does not need to stop medications, however some medications and foods may interfere with analysis.

Clinical Application
Plasma metanephrines may be performed for the investigation of suspected phaeochromocytoma, or paraglanglioma (PPGL). A phaeochromocytoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumour which secretes excessive catecholamines. PPGLs may also secrete excess catecholamines when they arise in the sympathetic paravertebral ganglia of the abdomen, thorax and pelvis.
For GPs suspecting a phaechromocytoma or PPGL, due to the sample requirements for plasma metanephrines, we suggest performing a 24-urine metanephrines instead.
Stress should be avoided, if possible. Some medications are known to increase catecholamine and metabolite concentrations, which can be seen in the link below. Some amine rich foods have also been shown to increase plasma 3-methoxytyramine, also seen in the link below.
