Clinical Application
Cystatin C is an endogenous protein synthesised by all nucleated cells. It is a cysteine protease inhibitor.

Cystatin C is relatively freely filtered by the glomeruli, due to its small size. It is reabsorbed by proximal renal tubular cells.

Cystatin C can be used as an alternate marker for renal glomerular function. Cystatin C levels rise as kidney function and glomerular filtration rate decreases.
