Clinical Application
Free fatty acids (FFAs), which include beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), are produced when glucose cannot be used as a fuel source. FFAs can be measured in the investigation of hypoglycaemia, or in those with symptoms associated with ketoacidosis.

The ratio of FFA/BHB may be used to detect fatty acid oxidation defects, or hyperinsulinism.

Please note: This is not the same as very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA) or essential fatty acids.
