The Urology Team

Mr Tim Bates

Mr Tim Bates

Mr Bates has been a Consultant Urologist in Bath for over 10 years.

He graduated from Nottingham Medical School in 1987 with honours and underwent surgical training in Bristol and the South-West. He was awarded a Master's degree from the University of Bristol for research into the molecular genetics of prostate cancer.

Prior to being appointed in Bath, he completed a paediatric surgical fellowship in Oxford. Mr Bates has expertise in a broad range of urological conditions including benign and malignant prostate disease. He has received specialist training in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer, urinary stone disease, complex urinary tract reconstruction and paediatric surgery.

He is clinical lead for Governance and Risk Management in the department of Urology. He plays an active role in surgical training and is a member of the regional training committee.

Mr Chris Gallegos

Mr Gallegos is a Consultant Urologist with a particular interest in Urinary tract stone disease, lower urinary tract symptoms and general oncology.

After graduating at Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1983 he went on to gain his Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and later his Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons (Urology).

Mr Edward Jefferies

Mr Edward Jefferies

Clinical Director of the Urology Department

Mr Jefferies is a Consultant Urologist at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. He qualified from Guy's, Kings & St Thomas' Medical School in 2006. He trained in the South West of England and has received specialist training in the management of lower urinary tract symptoms, complex stone disease and prostate cancer diagnosis. He gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Urology in 2014 and was then appointed to the trust as a consultant in 2016.

During his training he undertook research into the side effects of treatments for advanced prostate cancer, presenting his work at national and international meetings and multiple journals. He was also the training representative at the British Association of Urological Surgeons Oncology Committee from 2014-2016. He is the specialist tutor for Urology at the RUH and is responsible for the supervision for the urology registrars during their training at the Trust.

Miss Emma Marsdin

Miss Emma Marsdin

Miss Marsdin is a Consultant Urologist with a particular interest in laparoscopic upper tract oncology and urinary stone disease, alongside general urology.

After graduating at Imperial College, London in 2008 she went onto gain her Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons (Urology) in 2017. She trained as a urologist in both Oxford and Southwest deaneries and after completed an laparoscopic fellowship in upper tract oncology and urinary stone disease in Perth, Western Australia. She joined the Bath Consultant team full-time in 2019.

Jon McFarlane

Mr Jon McFarlane

Mr McFarlane, Consultant Urologist, qualified from Cambridge University in 1990. He trained as a urologist in Oxford. He has a specialist interest in urological cancer especially the management of prostate cancer.

He offers brachytherapy and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy for the treatment of early prostate cancer.

Miss Lucy Simmons

Miss Lucy Simmons is a Consultant Urological surgeon at The Royal United Hospital in Bath. She graduated from Newcastle Medical School in 2006. After graduating she completed her early years medical training in the North-East. Following this, she spent time working in Australia in Emergency Medicine, Rural Medicine and Intensive care.

Lucy then continued her Surgical training in the South-West before undertaking research Master's degree in exploring the use of Imaging for the diagnosis of Prostate Cancer and Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer in University College London. Miss Simmons gained her fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Urology in 2020. Lucy has a specialist interests in Paediatric Urology, Prostate Cancer Diagnostics, Active Surveillance and Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer. She also has a keen interest in Surgical training and education, mentoring and staff wellbeing.

Mr Hector Barba

Mr Hector S Barba is a Consultant Urologist with a special interest in minimally-invasive and open surgery for General Urology, urinary stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia, ureteric reconstruction and cancer. He graduated from Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City in 2009, and trained for Urology at Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion Salvador Zubiran, one of the most specialised reference centres in Latin America. He was sponsored by the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

He later achieved a fellowship in Endourology and benign Laparoscopy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2017-18 by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. This was followed by a Robotic Urology fellowship at the Bristol Urological Institute 2018-19.

He is a qualified Robotic Surgeon ever since. After a period as Substantive Urology Consultant and Assistant Professor at Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion Salvador Zubiran, he returned to England, consolidating his senior experience in the Country as a Senior Specialty Doctor at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in 2021. He then joined as a Consultant Urologist at RUH Bath in 2023 to introduce and develop a Robotic Urology service to the Trust in both pelvic and upper tract surgery.

Ayman Ali

Mr Ayman Ali

Ayman Ali M.B.B.Ch, Msc Urol, MD Urol, FRCS Urol.

Ayman completed his medical studies in 2010 in Egypt with an Excellent with honours grade . As one of the top medical graduates he has been offered Urological residency in TBRI one of the top teaching institutes where he did his basic and advanced Urological training. He did his master's degree in the wide fame top university Ain shams with a research on Castration resistant prostate cancer in 2015.

He then completed his advanced Urological training in 2019 and this was crowned by finishing his doctorate degree in the same university with research on minimally invasive Endourological Surgeries for treatment of stones, mini PCNL and RIRS. He has been appointed as a consultant and clinical lecturer after that.

Ayman also did a clinical fellowship in Heidelberg university in Germany in 2018 in Laparoscopic and Robotic Urology.

He moved to the UK in 2020 where he undertook two Robotic Urology fellowships. The first at Royal Surrey Hospital at Guildford, one of the highest volume Pelvic Oncology Robotic centres followed by gaining comprehensive experience in Robotic Urology in both pelvic and upper renal tract in his second fellowship at Portsmouth University Hospitals.

He Joined the Urology team in Bath as a Consultant in 2023. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has several publications in peer reviewed journals. He also has presented before in the world congress of Endourology and the American Urological Association meetings. His special interest includes Robotic Urology besides his interest also in minimally invasive modalities for treatment of stones

The Oncology Team

Mark Beresford

Professor Mark Beresford

Professor Beresford is an oncologist specialising in treatment of breast and urological cancers.

He qualified from Cambridge and Oxford Universities in 1995 and went on to train in oncology at Mount Vernon and University Hospital London. He practised as a consultant oncologist at the Bristol Oncology Centre before moving to the Royal United Hospital in 2011.

Professor Beresford has a MD in predicting tumour response to chemotherapy. He has a special interest in imaging in renal cell cancer and new radiotherapy techniques in prostate cancer. He is on the committee of the British Uro-oncology Group (BUG).

Dr Olivera Frim

Dr Frim is an oncologist who is originally from Belgrade in Serbia.

For the last six years she has worked as a consultant at the RUH specialising in the treatment of kidney, bladder and prostate cancer.
