Acute Medicine
Overview
Acute Medicine forms part of the Emergency Directorate, and comprises the Medical Assessment Unit (including Ambulatory Care), the Chest Pain Unit, and the Medical Short Stay Unit.
MAU and CPU have a target length of stay of up to 12 – 24 hours, and are for the initial assessment and management of acutely ill medical patients prior to discharge or admission into the hospital. MSSU is for patients who do need a one or two-night stay in hospital, and these patients remain under the care of the acute medicine team.
Our aim is to provide a responsive interface between primary and secondary care needs, identifying and managing those unwell patients who require inpatient acute hospital treatment, while also supporting primary care clinicians in managing other patients safely and effectively in the community.
