About the Ward

The Intensive Therapy Unit and High Dependence Unit are all part of Critical Care Services. Patients are admitted to the critical care unit if they require or are likely to require support of one or more organs within the body, or if they require a period of enhanced observation.

Ward Layout

The unit has thirteen beds, comprising of 7 Intensive Therapy Unit beds and 6 High Dependency Unit beds, which are used flexibly according to the needs of the patients on any given day. This includes four side rooms. Over 90% of the unit's admissions are of an emergency nature; 10% are admitted following elective (or planned) surgery.

The unit has a large visitors room that has tea and coffee making facilities. An interview room is available to ensure privacy when receiving news of a patients' condition from a doctor or nurse. A bedroom is available for relatives wishing to stay overnight (sleeps two) and a lounge area is available which has a kitchenette. A relative's toilet and shower room is located on the unit.

Visitors to the unit will be given a relative information leaflet explaining the workings of the unit, visiting times and hand washing requirements.

Disabled facilities and baby changing facilities are situated in the main corridor/atrium.

Meals and Drinks

Meals and drinks are provided throughout the day according to the patient's individual requirements.

Personal Belongings

Due to limited space, we are unable to keep large amounts of property. It is helpful if we can have toiletries, personal photographs and shaving kit if needed.

The Care Team

A large multidisciplinary team delivers patient and family centered care.

The medical team comprises thirteen critical care consultants, five middle grade doctors and nine resident doctors, led by a lead clinician. Junior doctors rotate through critical care to gain more experience of critical care medicine and the unit is currently training two critical care practitioners as permanent members of the critical care team.

A matron, five senior sisters and fifteen sisters/charge nurses lead a large nursing team. Student nurses and post registration nurses undertake placements on the unit. A practice development senior sister (nurse educator) compliments this team.

A senior physiotherapist heads up a team of two permanent and two rotating critical care physiotherapists. The unit is supported by two critical care pharmacists and one critical care dietician. Supporting services such as speech and language visit the unit on a planned basis. The unit has two dedicated cleaning staff.
