About the Ward

Ward Location

Pulteney ward is located in RUH Zone B on the first floor at the end of the corridor. It is also called ward B40.

Ward Layout

Pulteney Ward has 30 beds arranged 4 bays of 6 beds (2 male bays and 2 female bays) and 6 single side rooms. There is a small communal day room with comfortable chairs available for use by patients and relatives.

Entrance to the ward is gained by swipe card access for reasons of patient safety. Alternatively the door bell is linked to an intercom which can be used to speak to the ward receptionist/ward clerk who will open the doors for you.

The main reception desk and nurses' station is located in the middle of the ward on the left hand side.

Visiting Times

On Pulteney ward, we have protected mealtimes between 12 noon and 1pm, then again in the evening, 5pm until 6pm.

Official visiting times on Pulteney Ward are:

We ask that visiting times are respected as some patients on the ward may be very ill and need quiet time to rest. However, in certain circumstances visiting times can be more flexible; this will need pre-arranging with the nurse in charge of the ward. It is possible for relatives to stay overnight on the ward if their loved one is very unwell although there are no guests beds available on the ward to accommodate this.

Wards may temporarily close during outbreaks of diarrhoea and vomiting to try and limit the spread of such infections to other areas of the hospital. Visiting may be restricted at such times, although relatives are still able to visit 'closed' wards they do so at their own risk.

Meals and Drinks

There is a varied menu on the ward and any special dietary requirements will be catered for; just let the ward staff know. Menu cards are handed out several hours before each meal to allow patients time to choose their preferred option on the menu for the next meal. The completed menu cards are later collected by ward staff so the kitchen can cater for everybody's personal choices.

Meal times are approximately as follows:

The RUH has a policy of 'protected meal times' and patients should not be seen by doctors, nurses or any other therapists during this time. This is to ensure you have the opportunity to eat your meal without interruptions whilst it is hot.

If however you miss a meal for any reason - e.g. you are off the ward having a scan, then a snack menu is available.

Hot drinks are served with meals and also mid-morning, mid-afternoon and in the evening.

There is a mobile newsagent trolley which visits the ward frequently selling newspapers, magazines, snacks and confectionary.

Assistance will be given to anyone who needs help with eating and drinking. We encourage relatives and carers to visit at mealtimes if they wish to assist with eating and drinking.

Personal Belongings

To help keep you comfortable during your stay, we encourage your relatives to check that you have sufficient clothing, slippers, toiletries and towels, etc. We suggest you do not bring valuables into the hospital. However, you may find it useful to have a small amount of money if you wish to pay for the hairdresser or buy newspapers.

You are allowed to use mobile phones on the ward but we recommend these are kept in bedside lockers when not in use. On admission to the hospital you may be asked to sign a disclaimer form to say you are happy to take responsibility for any belongings you bring to the ward.

There is a cordless phone for patient use on the ward.
