General clinic

Clinics are held every day of the week at the RUH and several times a month at the various community hospitals. New patients generally seen at RUH and then followed up at community hospitals where appropriate.

Responsible consultants: Dr Atkin, Dr Ward, Dr Broughton, Dr Tan, Dr Bhattacharya, Dr Setty.

Referral criteria:

All patients with type 1 diabetes
Patients with type 2 diabetes with poor control or complications
Any patient where the type of diabetes is uncertain at diagnosis (e.g. possible Maturity-onset diabetes of the young - MODY)
Secondary diabetes (e.g. cystic fibrosis-related)

Young Persons' Clinic

Clinics are held on a Tuesday evening between 4-6pm every 4 weeks at the RUH and on Tuesday mornings every 4 weeks at Chippenham Hospital.

Responsible consultants: Drs Tan and Rich (RUH), Dr Ward (Chippenham)

A diabetes nurse specialist and dietician are also present at most clinics.

Referral criteria:

Anyone aged 16-25 years

Referral mechanism:

e-Referrals (GPs)
Generic letter to the department from diabetes nurses or paediatrics

Foot Clinic

Clinics are held on Wednesday Mornings and Thursday Afternoons.

Responsible consultant: Dr Atkin and Dr Bhattacharya

A specialist podiatrist is also present

Referral criteria:

Acute foot ulceration
Chronic ulceration not responding to community treatment
Suspected Charcot foot

Referral mechanism:

Contact Diabetes Centre (01225 824991)
Patients will generally be seen within a week

Pump clinic

Clinics are held on Wednesday afternoons (5 per month) and Thursday afternoon (1 per month), one clinic serves as a transition clinic for young people of pump therapy.

Responsible consultant: Drs Ward, Tan, Rich, Setty

A specialist nurse and dietician are also present

Referral criteria:

All patients with diabetes on continuous insulin infusion therapy (insulin pump)

Referral mechanism:

eRS (GPs)
Generic letter to the department from diabetes nurses or paediatrics
Please copy to DSN at Bath to arrange funding transfer and support pre-clinic (this applies even for Wiltshire and Somerset patients) ruh-tr.insulinpumpsupport@nhs.net

Antenatal clinic

Clinics are held on every Friday morning in Princess Anne Wing

Responsible consultant: Dr Broughton and Dr Bhattacharya

A specialist nurse and midwife are also present

Referral criteria:

All patients with diabetes at the point their pregnancy is confirmed
All patients undergoing active treatment for Graves' disease, prolactinomas and other endocrine conditions which may alter in pregnancy

Urgent phone call to Dr Broughton's secretary
