General endocrine clinic

Clinics are held daily at the RUH

Responsible consultants are: Dr Atkin, Dr Ward, Dr Broughton, Dr Tan, Dr Bhattacharya, Dr Rich, Dr Setty, Dr Edwards

Referral criteria:

All patients with endocrine conditions requiring secondary care management
Exclusions: thyroid nodules (refer ENT), simple obesity (not funded by ICBs), paediatric endocrinology (refer paediatrics)

eRS (GPs)

Joint endocrine surgical clinic

Clinics are held twice a month at the RUH.

Responsible consultants: Dr Ward, Dr Broughton with
ENT surgeons: Mr Gillett or Mr Carswell

Referral criteria:

Primary hyperparathyroidism – after full endocrine work up

Procedures: Fine needle aspiration of thyroid nodules.

Generic letter to the department

Joint pituitary clinic

Clinics are held alternate months on a Wednesday afternoon (preceded by a pituitary radiology meeting)

Responsible consultants: Dr Setty and Mr Nelson (Pituitary surgeon, Southmead hospital)

Referral criteria:

Pituitary tumours
Craniopharyngioma
Other space occupying lesions in pituitary fossa affecting pituitary function

Referral mechanism:

Internal: Email referral to ruh-tr.endocrinediabetes@nhs.net

eRS (GPs)

Young persons' endocrine clinic

Clinics are held on Tuesday mornings every 3 months

Responsible consultants: Drs Allen, Edmonds (consultant paediatrician)

Patient type:

Transition clinic for patients between paediatric and adult endocrine services

Referral mechanism:

Most patients referred internally from paediatrics
eRS (GPs)

Bariatric clinic (level 3) - BANES patients only

Please note that this service is still temporarily suspended from January 2024.

Referrals by exception only can be sent to ruh-tr.endocrinediabetes@nhs.net where they will be triaged on a case by case basis.

Exceptional criteria:

Patients who have a life-threatening health condition directly related to obesity.

This includes, but is not limited to:

Severe obstructive sleep apnoea leading to severe hypoventilation
Heart Failure / Ischaemic Heart Disease that could be vastly improved by weight loss
Severe obesity, with a BMI > 50 in individuals aged 25 and below
Severe obesity, with a BMI > 60 in individuals aged 26 and over
Individuals with a genetic condition leading to obesity

Please note that the above criteria are a guideline only, and referrals will continue to be triaged on a case-by-case basis.
