Train as a nurse with the RUH

Student Nurse

We work in partnership with a wide selection of universities to provide student nurse placement opportunities to ensure you can gain valuable experience in delivering exceptional, person-centred care which we pride ourselves on.

When you come to us as a student nurse you will develop your experience in a range of clinical settings. We can offer you the opportunity to work across a range of paediatric, mental health and adult specialities.

Looking for a student placement at the RUH?

At the RUH we offer placements with the following Universities:

Bournemouth, Brighton, Coventry, Open University, Oxford Brookes, Plymouth, Gloucester, University of the West of England (UWE) and Winchester.

Elective placements are offered throughout the year for a minimum period of two weeks and up to three months for a minimum of 15 hours/per week.

All applicants must be able competent to undertake observations such as temperature, pulse, manual blood pressure and be up-to-date with mandatory training.

Places are limited, therefore we ask students to provide us with a minimum of eight weeks advanced notice.

The RUH will provide supervision and feedback, but will not complete final assessments.

Our committed team of Practice Assessors ensure that all of our pre-registration nurses are supported whilst in practice. We also have a dedicated Student Practice Facilitator team to provide additional support and many areas have Collaborative Learning in Practice (CLiP) champions who use CLiP and coaching as a model of supervision.

Weekly Student Clinics

This is a great opportunity for students of all cohorts to come together and reflect on their practice using peer support to guide through any challenges or questions. It is also an opportunity to raise concerns and/or suggest new ideas.

Upon completing your training and receiving your NMC pin, we would love you to become part of our nursing team and come and work with us. When you join us as a newly-qualified nurse you will be invited to take part in our preceptorship programme after our induction programme.
