Veteran & Armed Forces Aware
Defence Medical Welfare Service
The Defence Medical Welfare Officer is a brand new role for the RUH, offering support for veterans, reservists, serving military personnel, and their families - including staff too.
Karen Cameron is based on-site Tuesday to Thursday and can support with:
- Information, advice and guidance
providing a single point of contact, giving emotional and practical support - A tailored service
it's person-centred, focussing on what the individual and their loved ones need - Access to support
including mental health, relationship issues, substance misuse and wellbeing support - Supported referrals
such as education and training, housing, employment, finance and early years
This helps us to offer the best possible support for the people we care for and their loved ones. It can also help avoid delayed discharges and re-attendances at the Emergency Department.
Who is this for?
The United Kingdom Armed Forces are the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force. The communities include existing personnel and reservists, cadets, veterans, families and carers.
There is no minimum length of service which makes someone a veteran, it can be just one day.
This service can support any patient, including outpatients. Staff can also access support.
