Leadership
At the RUH we have a wide range of leadership opportunities available. Our Trust's Clinical Leadership Mentor (CLM) is Professor Jay Suntharaligam and he is assisted in that role by Emma Clements (Deputy Medical Education Manager). They work to facilitate training opportunities around leadership and management to help build your CV and prepare for more senior roles in the future.
Current opportunities
- Paid Membership to the FMLM (Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management):
The RUH are able to offer PGMC funded Resident Doctor Membership to the FMLM for up to 15 applicants. The FMLM supports members and organisations to develop, maintain and improve medical leadership and management for better patient care and so this is a great opportunity – and something that would sit well on your CV. There is a well-established leadership shadowing opportunities SharePoint where you can sign up to sit on meetings, committees and panels with a variety of senior managers and executives across the Trust. These opportunities are being updated regularly so please check back again. Please note that will need to access this SharePoint link via an internal device. Leadership Shadowing Bookings 2023 2024 - PGDiT representative opportunities on Trust-wide committees
Last year the faculty provided opportunities to act as a PGDiT representative on a number of different Trust-wide committees for a 12-month period. This was well received and so there are ongoing plans to repeat this. It is expected that those who join a committee will contribute actively to meetings, using their experience of working in other Trusts and their experience of working 'on the shop floor' to improve the output from the committee. They may also be asked to take on actions from the committee. The experience will hopefully not only prove interesting and insightful into how hospitals work, but will also help augment your CV – allowing you to add a 'local leadership role' under management activities. To allow for leave/nights etc, two representatives will be selected for committees. Applications would usually involve a short email documenting the following:- Which committee you would like to apply to (candidates can apply to a maximum of one committee)
- Your current grade
- Which department you currently work in
- A description of why you be suitable for the role (250 words max)

- Associate Specialty Tutor posts
Some departments have Associate Specialty Tutor posts. These 12-month posts, aimed at SpR-level DiTs, are designed to help departmental Specialty Tutors organise Resident Doctor related activities. A job description is attached. This provides a good opportunity to include a leadership post on your CV. Below are listed the departments that hosted an AST post last year, and the relevant Specialty Tutor to approach to see whether the post is available this year. - Registrar Listening spaces
The PGME team are always looking for new ways to support doctors in training and have offered near misses sessions for F1 doctors three times a year for a long time now, allowing PGDiTs an opportunity to discuss in a supportive and confidential setting any clinical scenarios they have encountered which they are worried about. The feedback from these sessions has always been very good and generates a lot of peer support. To date the PGME team have never offered this opportunity to other grades. At a recent educational conference a similar forum was suggested for registrars called – 'listening spaces' which was raised as an example of good educational practice. Dr Becs Mason, Associated Director for Medical Education (ADME) is keen to offer something similar here at the RUH and would really like an ST3+ PGDiT or equivalent to lead the project so that it delivers what PGDiTs and LEDs need. Since being appointed as Clinical Leadership Mentor Professor Suntharaligam has delivered roving leadership talks aimed at PGDiTs of all grades at departmental educational meetings, F1/F2/CMT/SpR teaching etc. If you would like me to deliver a session to your local group please get in touch by email – jay.suntharalingam@nhs.net - Leadership study day
In the last two years we have delivered an annual Leadership study day aimed at PGDiTs from all grades each April. Each day has attracted 60-80 PGDiTs and has been well received. We hope to do the same in April 2024 so please keep an eye out for a 'save the date' email later in the year. - National/regional resources

Professor Suntharaligam is looking for a PGDiT to help deliver all of the above activities. The previous ACLM postholder worked closely with Emma and Professor Suntharaligam to organise events, collect feedback, coordinate setting up the study day and managed to present some of the activities at an educational conference.
