Alcohol and Substance Misuse
Royal United Occupational Health offers an intensive support programme for workers with alcohol and substance misuse problems.
Employees referred into this programme have regular appointments with one of our physicians and go through a course of counselling with our addictions counsellor.
With their consent they are signed up to a programme of random testing which has been designed in such a way as to make it impossible for them to avoid testing.
The combination of the tests used and the random nature of the testing programme means that employees will be detected if they continue to misuse alcohol or substances or suffer a relapse after a period of abstinence.
This programme has proved successful in many cases.
Given the nature of the problem, inevitably some employees fail to manage their misuse. In such cases the programme provides clear evidence of continuing problems which permits employers to consider whether continuation of employment is appropriate.
