Research aims
Our research contributes to improving routine care of families during pregnancy and birth. We support the understanding of more complex conditions affecting pregnant women.
We also undertake research into conditions that affect women’s reproductive and gynaecological health. For example, fibroids, chronic endometritis, recurrent miscarriage and prevention of ovarian cancer.

Research impacts
The results of national research studies can introduce changes at a local level:
- We have made positive changes to the provision of pain relief in labour
- We have also changed positioning in labour for first time mums who have chosen an epidural
- Previous research investigating pre-eclampsia resulted in changes to the NICE guidelines. These recommended using a new blood test to help diagnose the condition. We were the first hospital within the South West to use the test as standard practice
