Dietetics
What are dietitians?
Dietitians are qualified and regulated health professionals that use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease. They translate this research into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.
Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals to be regulated by law and are governed by an ethical code to ensure that they always work to the highest standard.
What we do:
Our dietitians help to support individuals to eat well throughout their entire cancer pathway. There is lots of evidence that tells us that eating well, maintaining a healthy weight and activity levels during treatment can help people to cope with cancer treatment, support the immune system, and a good quality of life. It can also prepare you for surgery and support your recovery after surgery.
Dietitians can give you tailored and practical advice to help you manage any dietary concerns relating to your cancer, cancer treatment or longer-term treatment side effects. This might include:
- Concerns about unintentional weight loss or a poor appetite
- Gastrointestinal symptoms eg. nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, wind, bloating and pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy
- Eating when you have a stoma
- For further information on more specific nutritional concerns please see these links
We can offer one to one appointments face to face, on video call or over the telephone.
How can I be referred to the dietitian?
Ask your health care professional to refer you (eg. nurse, cancer support worker, doctor/GP, or any other member of your cancer team).
If you are an inpatient, your nurse or doctor can refer you to the inpatient dietitian team.
