About Us

The RUH’s Vulnerable People Strategy

The RUH’s vision is that all vulnerable people will receive the right care and support, in the right place, and at the right time.

To achieve this, we have produced a Vulnerable People Strategy. We have co-produced this with the people we care for and their carers, the people we work with, and the people in our community, including our community partners.

How are we improving care for vulnerable people?

  • Our Enhanced Care and Support Team provide expert, specialist support to our vulnerable patients throughout the hospital. A person-centered approach is at the centre of all they do
  • We have over 300 ‘Champions’ in different areas who support their colleagues in meeting individuals’ needs. These include:
    • Deaf Awareness Champions
    • Dementia Champions
    • Learning Disability and Autism Champions
  • Hospital passports, helping our staff provide the best possible care for patients with a learning disability and autistic people. Find out more
  • Autism awareness cards and posters to help staff better understand and support autistic people in the hospital
  • Easy read documents, helping make health information more accessible and understandable for all patients
  • Use of Makaton, sign speech and symbols, a communication aid for people with a learning disability or communication difficulties, helps meet individual needs
  • Bob’s Boxes, which are available for patients that are registered blind, and which include resources such as a radio with headphones, a talking clock, a memo maker, a plate guard, cup holder, non-slip table mat and Velcro dots
  • “This is me” booklets. This is a personal profile that gives important information about a person living with dementia. It supports the person when coming into an unfamiliar environment such as a hospital. It helps staff to see the person first and support them with person-centred care and support
