Unplanned Absence |
Some doctors may find that they need to take unplanned leave at very short notice. If this is the case, please contact your educational supervisor or SuppoRTT Champion as soon as you are able, in order to access support.
There is a separate unplanned absence form to be completed. This is slightly altered due to the nature of sudden unplanned absence.

Please look at the pre-return checklist to help keep you on track to a successful and supported return to work.
Why is planning required?
There will be a lot of preparation that will need to occur to support your transition back to work. There are many individuals that need to be informed of your planned return to work, these include:
- TPD / FPD / Educational Supervisor
- Service Lead
- Rota Coordinator
- HR department
It is the educational supervisors or TPD responsibility to ensure staffing and rota coordinators adhere to this plan as well as ensure they are aware of the trainees need for enhanced supervision on return.
They will be informed of your return date and would need to plan an initial induction session for the returning trainee.
This should include:
- Essential employer induction (ID Badges, parking, security)
- Timetable for the first 10 days returning back to work
- Awareness of any new personnel/ new equipment or key policy or procedural changes
Enhanced supervision
Evidence based practice has encouraged the introduction of a period of enhanced supervision on return to work. In order to regain clinical knowledge and confidence, doctors are supported to undergo a period of at least 10 days.
What can you expect from this period of enhanced supervision?
You should expect to be closely supervised and by the end of the period be working at the level of equal to the training programme stage you are at.
How does this affect my pay?
Your pay for this period will be at your usual rate, as if you had returned to your usual working pattern. Please check your payslip at the end of your first month and discuss with payroll and HR if you are unsure you have been paid correctly. Contact ruh-tr.ePayroll@nhs.net
What if I don't want to have Enhanced Supervision?
This should be discussed with your supervisor and even your FPD/TPD during the pre-return to meeting. This should happen in advance of your anticipated return date and should be documented in your pre-return-to-work form. Please consider that even the most senior trainees often undertake enhanced supervision as evidence shows trainees do experience a degree of non-technical skills attrition whilst on their time away from training. It can be helpful regardless of prior clinical experience or knowledge.
How do I arrange enhanced supervision?
After your pre-return meeting your supervisor is responsible for constructing a return-to-work plan and sharing this information with relevant parties. If you are concerned this may not have been done or are unhappy with the return plan given to you then you can contact the SuppoRTT team who can ensure your supervision is appropriate.
Can I work out of hours / on call during the enhanced supervision period?
You can volunteer to work out of hours / on-call during the enhanced supervision period providing a senior or consultant colleague is identified to offer supervision. Again any decisions like this should be discussed and agreed with your TPD / FPD / Supervisor during your Pre-Return meeting.
Will the period of Enhanced Supervision count towards my CCT?
Usually, no. The "Training clock" restarts once you are signed-off to restart normal duties at your Post-Return meeting. If necessary, this can be reviewed with your TPD / FPD / Supervisor or at your next ARCP panel review, especially if you have a longer period of Enhanced Supervision and feel it should count towards training.
What if I need more than the standard ten working days of Enhanced Supervision?
No problem. There is a long list of reasons why a person would need longer than the 10 days and some specialities this is usually recommended. You should only return to your usual working patterns when you feel you are ready and when agreed with your supervisor.
