Meet Trish, Advanced Practitioner Sonographer at the RUH
For anyone considering a career in sonography or diagnostic imaging, Trish believes the RUH offers an exceptional environment in which to learn, develop and thrive.
With a supportive culture, investment in professional development and opportunities to shape your career, the Trust provides the foundation for a rewarding and impactful healthcare career.
"My journey from newly qualified Radiographer to Sonographer has been shaped by the opportunities, training and supportive culture at the RUH – and I wouldn't have it any other way."
When Trish joined the Royal United Hospitals Bath in 2011 as a newly qualified Radiographer, she had no idea where her career would eventually lead. What began as a first role after university has developed into a fulfilling career as a Sonographer, supported by the opportunities, encouragement and investment provided by the RUH every step of the way.
Finding the right place to start
During her interview at the RUH, she was immediately struck by the welcoming atmosphere and sense of community.
"I was attracted to the RUH's warm, friendly atmosphere and diverse, inclusive workforce, and what I've valued most since joining is the Trust's commitment to professional development."
Working in the beautiful city of Bath was an added bonus, providing the opportunity to build a career in a location rich in history, culture and quality of life.
Building experience across radiology
Trish began her career as a rotational Radiographer, gaining experience across a wide range of specialities including General and A&E X-ray, Portables, Fluoroscopy, Theatres and CT.
Working across different areas of radiology for almost three years gave her a strong clinical foundation and exposure to a diverse range of patients and diagnostic services.
"The rotational role allowed me to develop a broad range of skills and helped me understand where my interests and strengths lay. It was a fantastic way to start my career."
Investment in career development
Professional development has been a defining feature of Trish's career at the RUH. The Trust funded her postgraduate ultrasound training, enabling her to transition into sonography and develop specialist expertise.
Since then, she has continued to broaden her skills through a variety of professional development opportunities. These have included presenting a poster at the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS), attending specialist study days and conferences, taking part in a military challenge day focused on teamwork, resilience and leadership, contributing to the Trust's Improving Together programme and becoming involved in departmental health and safety and manual handling training.
"The support I've received has enabled me to continually expand my skills, take on new challenges and grow professionally throughout my career."
Making a difference every day
For Trish, the most rewarding part of being a Sonographer is the direct impact she can have on patient care. Every day brings opportunities to meet patients, understand their concerns and use diagnostic imaging to support their treatment journey.
"I enjoy meeting patients and gathering information about their symptoms. Combining that with the findings from the scan allows me to contribute directly to their diagnostic journey and help clinicians determine the best next steps in their care.
"It's incredibly satisfying to know you're playing a key role in helping patients get answers and access the treatment they need."
