Treatments and therapies

Your treatment will be planned by a multidisciplinary team made up of different healthcare professionals and will depend on your type of cancer.

The multidisciplinary team meets regularly to discuss the best treatment options for each patient in their care, taking into account the results of tests and your general health.

Your doctor will then discuss the different treatment options available to you, taking into account your own preferences. You may find it helpful to take a family member or friend with you when your treatment is being discussed.

The team may include:

  • Oncologists, also known as cancer consultants, and may be medical, clinical or surgical. Medical oncologists specialise in treating cancer with chemotherapy and clinical oncologists specialise in using radiotherapy to treat cancer.
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists or 'keyworkers' who coordinate aspects of patient care and offer ongoing support to patients and their families both in an inpatient and outpatient setting, they are supported by a Macmillan Support Worker.
  • Radiologists who specialise in reading scans and x-rays
  • Geneticists
  • Pathologists who specialise in looking at cells under a microscope to determine if cancer is present
  • Psychologists, psychiatrist & counsellors
  • Dietitians
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists
