What we offer
We provide services for adults on an outpatient basis, including osteoporosis clinics and DXA (bone density) scanning. In addition, we provide a monthly clinic for patients with more complex metabolic bone diseases (including Paget's disease, osteogenesis imperfecta and others).
Initial treatment for osteoporosis is usually oral medication, but if this is unsuitable there are alternatives including:
- IV Bisphosphonate Therapy: Our infusion clinic runs daily for patients requiring intravenous bisphosphonate therapy.
- Denosumab: A twice yearly subcutaneous injection for osteoporosis, which can often be given in primary care under the supervision of the osteoporosis clinic.
- Anabolic Therapies: These can be effective in patients with more severe osteoporosis who cannot tolerate bishosphonates, or for whom they are not effective.
We have extensive experience of the use of all of the above treatments, and can advise which one is most suitable for each individual under our care.
Falls and Fracture Liaison service
In addition we run the hospital's Falls and Fracture Liaison service. This service aims to systematically identify individuals who have had low trauma fractures so that their bone health can be assessed.
In some cases medication will be recommended; other patients will be offered a DXA scan to determine whether or not treatment is needed. Through this service we aim to identify those individuals with a high risk of future fracture so that treatment can be recommended as appropriate.
