About the Department
We are a Nurse-led multi-disciplinary Orthopaedic Pre-admission Department where patients attend 3-6 weeks before orthopaedic surgery.
It is a one-stop clinic - patients will have various appropriate pre-operative tests and procedures carried out and will be able ask questions and be made aware of common post-operative complications, pain control, goals and expectations of surgery.
Discharge planning will also be discussed.
The Consultant or senior member of their team will normally see patients to confirm appropriate surgery /suspend surgery or decide if surgery is no longer indicated.
Patients for total hip replacement or spinal surgery will normally see an Occupational Therapist preoperatively.
Each consultant has a session once a week or twice a month.
Patients are asked to allow a full day for this visit although we would expect to have completed all tests by mid-afternoon.
Patients are asked to bring their current medication with them.
